Coppell was a farm town of 1,728 people in 1970. Then Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport opened alongside it in 1974, and the city reached 16,881 people by 1990 and 35,958 by 2000. Most of its houses went up in those two decades, with original systems bought and installed within a few years of each other. Most central systems are replaced somewhere around the 15 to 20 year mark, so many of those originals came out in the 2000s and early 2010s. The replacements are now the aging systems. In plenty of Coppell homes, the unit in the side yard is the second one the house has had, and it is old enough to be facing the same decision the first one did.
What has changed since the last replacement is the refrigerant. Systems installed before 2010 often run on R-22, which has not been produced or imported in the United States since 2020, so a leak on one of them means paying for scarce refrigerant. Systems from 2010 on mostly run on R-410A, which is being phased down, and new split systems now use a newer refrigerant. The outdoor unit and the indoor coil have to be built for the same refrigerant, so a new outdoor unit cannot simply be bolted onto the old coil. Before we quote a repair on an older Coppell system, we tell you which refrigerant it runs on, because that changes the math more than the repair itself does.

Repair or Replace a Coppell System Past 15 Years
A quick check is the $5,000 rule: multiply the age of the system in years by the repair quote. Over $5,000, start pricing a replacement. A 16 year old system with a $350 repair comes to $5,600, which says it is time to compare. Under $5,000, the repair usually makes sense.
The rule is a starting point, not a verdict. A repair covered by a parts warranty changes everything. An R-22 system with a leak leans toward replacement even when the repair quote is small, because the refrigerant is the expensive part. And a third repair in two summers says more about where a system is headed than any single quote.
If you do replace, ask how the new system was sized. A house can change a lot in 35 years, through new windows, added insulation, or a converted garage, and "same size as the old one" is not a load calculation. We size from the house as it stands today and show the equipment and the labor on separate lines, so you can compare us with anyone else.

In Coppell, permit applications, plans, payments, and inspection scheduling all run through the City's Civic Access portal, handled by Building Inspections within Community Development. Working out whether you need the work at all? These are free, they run in your browser, and none of them ask for your email.
- Should you repair or replace your air conditioner? Compare cost per remaining year, not sticker price. Divide the repair quote by the years the system has left. Divide a replacement by however many years you expect a new one to last. The lower number is the cheaper path on cost alone, before you weigh comfort, efficiency, and the odds of a second failure. You set the service-life number yourself in the calculator.
- What size air conditioner do you actually need? No calculator can size your system, including this one. Sizing requires a Manual J load calculation, the industry method for working out how much heating and cooling a specific house needs, accounting for insulation, windows, orientation, ceiling height, duct losses, and air leakage. Floor area captures none of that. The Air Conditioning Contractors of America, the trade body that publishes the standard, is blunt about it: you cannot use square feet per ton to size an air conditioner, you have to do an actual load calculation.
- Are HVAC maintenance plans worth the money? A plan pays for itself when the included visits plus the discount you will really use come to more than the annual fee. Older equipment, multiple systems, or several trades on one plan clear that bar without much trouble. One newer system that rarely needs a service call usually does not.
